Carter Cox is a 6 year old boy who is teaching us all about sharing love, enduring hardships, and finding happiness in every situation.

In 2010 Carter was diagnosed with Phelan McDermid Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects only 1100 people worldwide. Carter is non-verbal, has low muscle tone, developmental delays, and health concerns such as seizures and GI complications. But one thing is for sure: Carter doesn't let any of this slow him down. He works hard in therapy every week to learn new skills in movement and communication. Without speaking a word, Carter makes deep connections with all that come in contact with him. His smile is contagious, and his hugs are tight. He is a blessing to his family, and everyone that knows him falls instantly in love with him.
In May of this year, Carter was selected to participate in the IGF-1 Clinical trial in New York at Mt. Sinai Medical Center's Seaver Autism Center. Carter and his family have been traveling from Mobile to New York every 2-3 weeks for testing and evaluations since May and will continue to do so through January. This has been a wonderful opportunity for Carter and he is improving as the trial goes on. But with this opportunity Carter's family has been responsible for all of their travel expenses.

We are so proud to know the Cox family. They work hard to give Carter every opportunity to thrive. Ryan works day in and out to provide for his family, and Erica takes care of Carter and Kenzie tirelessly. She always wears a smile on her face, whether she has been awake with Carter since 4:00 AM, spending her day in and out of therapy, or dealing with frequent hospital stays. Erica is always positive, always strong, always loving - not only to Carter and Kenzie, but to everyone she knows. Erica Cox is a warrior for good.
